INVISIBLE INSTITUTION

_________________________________ The house should evoke a sense of familiarity for the patient and reject the sterility of typical treatment spaces. Elements should include a connection with the outside, a removal of medical equipment from direct sightlines, and a notion of domestic familiarity.

_________________________________ Wood is an ideal material for patient spaces; their warm color palette and natural makeup create more of a familiar, homely atmosphere for occupants. Not only is the wood surface-level, but it also composes the structure of the “house,” completely separate from the clinic itself.

_________________________________ The wooden wall of the house keeps medical equipment away from patient sightlines. IV drips and blood-pressure machines reside in the room behind the door, where staff can manage it outside of the patients’ view.
